Project outline

Language is the vehicle of human thought. Although students of APEC reign try to communicate with each other, there are many difficulties due to the language barrier. Moreover, students want to learn each other's language, but there are no proper books to do so. Thus, we have drawn up a project to make a English- Korean-Filipino-Indonesian-Thai-Sakha-Russian language Phrasebook through the medium of English sentences. While carrying out this project, we are able to reach an understanding of other country¡¯s culture as well as each other's language. Also, through the learners' interaction in the process of carrying out this project, students can learn to work with each other and gain team spirit.

  • Applicable grade: fifth grade in elementary school ~ University
  • Activity level : intermediate
  • Activity period: 5 weeks
  • Materials needed : PC with Internet service, dictionaries(Korean, English, Korean-English, Tagalog, Indonesian, Thai, Sakha, Russian)
  • Applicable environment: general class, Multimedia room, Language room for English
  • Related curriculum :

Prerequisite for class

  • Subject part : dictionary search,  Roman alphabet.
  • ICT part : searching Internet and sending an e-mail, writing on bulletin board, copyright, making web-page  
  • Aims of the project :
    1. Students can communicate with students of other country in English or Filipino[Indonesian, Thai, Shakha, Russian ]
    2. Students can translate English their native language.
  • Tasks :
    1. Take basic conversational sentences in English according to the situation and translate them into YOUR NATIVE LANGUAGE.
    2. (Audio book) Make audio files (MP3) of the Phrasebook in YOUR NATIVE LANGUAGE.

Process

  • First step (first week)
    1. Make a group of four or more in class.
    2. Decide who does what.
    -the person who searches on the web : Find proper expressions of words and sentences as assigned
    -the person who refers to records : Find proper expressions of words and sentences as assigned using a dictionary, books, and a variety of documentary records.
    - audio maker/recorder ; make audio files in your native language
    - web publisher : Digitize data for publication.
    3. Make a plan to carry out the project.
  • Second step (second week~third week)
    1. Groups will search for the proper expressions in your native language to English words and sentences as assigned using the Internet, dictionary, books and so on.
    2. Translate assigned conversational sentences in English into your native language. In the case of Korean, mark the standard of pronunciation according to the Roman alphabet.
    3. Collect and arrange the search data and disclose the source of data to prevent problems relating to copyright.
  • Third step (fourth week)
    1. Cross check the expressions and correct errors by teachers, professors or professionals.
  • Fourth step (fifth week)
    1. Make a report - each group can freely make a report without a form but the report must contain the following contents:
      investigation date / class, class number of group member, name / investigation vocabulary or sentences(English-your native language) / content after investigation / referral of cite address / other data

    In the case of Korean, mark the standard of pronunciation according to the Roman alphabet.
    2. Each group member will look over their report and talk about it, arrange it accordingly and write about their feelings while carrying on the project.
    3. Make audio book : read and record audio files of the expressions in your language

Anticipated effect

By carrying out this project, we expect to not only get a deep understanding about our mother tongue but also to increase our command of English. Also, our understanding of Korean-Filipino-Indonesian-Thai-Sakha-Russian  language will help students of  5 countries to communicate with each other and to help us to understand each other's culture. Because this kind of project requires each group member's cooperation and collaboration , we expect to influence each other in a positive way and to raise the attitudes of learning with mutual cooperation. This book will be so useful to learn foreign languages as a foreigner or the  immigrated workers .

Matters that require attention in teaching

  • Let them use a variety of data such as Internet search, books, dictionary and so on.   
  • While carrying on this project, let them ask theteacher for advice
  • You can give them this project as an individual task or a group task.
  • You can make a group in the same grade of in the same class.
  • To prevent them from investigating the same parts, the teacher will have to distribute vocabulary to each group.
  • The teachers should teach students the Korean Roman alphabet..
  • Teachers help students to make and record Audio files correct..
